General Tips and Information

It is often stated that moving house is one of the most stressful events in a person’s life. Following is some general information and guides to assist you in making your move as smooth and stress free as possible.

There are peak and off peak times and seasons for moving companies. If your schedule allows it, try to book during off peak times. This will save you money and may also prevent any scheduling problems due to overbooking, etc.

Make sure to check with several different moving companies for estimates before choosing the company that will move you. Someone will come to your home and take an inventory of the items you have to move and give you an estimate. Make sure that you agree with the estimate, including any “fine print” before deciding on a company.

It is a good idea to take an inventory of all of the contents of your home and decide which items you want to move and which can be left behind. Once you decide which items you do not want, arrange to donate them or have a garage/moving sale. Once you have only to deal with the items you are taking with you it will be much easier to plan and pack.

Decide if you will pack your items, or if you will use a packing service. If you choose a service, contact the moving company in order to arrange this as well. Regardless of who does the packing, make sure to keep an inventory listing what is in each box. Also, clearly mark each box and where it is to go in your new home. This will make unpacking much easier.

If you do your own packing, keep in mind that many moving companies will not insure the items for damage or breakage. Make sure to pack carefully using the proper materials to ensure your items are protected.

If you have children, try to schedule the move when it will be least disruptive for them. Most younger children will not be affected by moving in the middle of a school year, but older children and teenagers, generally don’t like to be “the new kid”. If you can plan your move according to their schedule, this will also help make the transition to your new home as smooth as possible.

Contact the post office for a change of address form. Make sure to get copies of doctor records, school records, veterinary records, etc, if your move will require you to change doctors or schools.
