Self Service Moving
If you are going to move yourself, there are a few essential items that you must have. A rental truck; packing boxes in assorted sizes; packing paper; bubble wrap roll; a tape gun and plenty of rolls of tape; heavy gloves; a marker to mark the boxes; box cutter knife; padlocks; pen and paper for making an inventory sheet. In addition, there are some items that are very useful to have when packing and moving yourself. These are mattress covers, sofa and chair bags, rope, shrink wrap plastic, Styrofoam peanuts. When renting your truck, you might also want to rent a hand truck and furniture pads. This will make loading and unloading easier and help protect your items.
When loading the truck load the largest items, such as furniture and appliances first. Make sure to put the heaviest boxes on the bottom and stack the boxes evenly according to weight. Pack a section of the truck at a time, as tightly as possible from floor to ceiling and fill in any open spaces with smaller boxes to avoid shifting items. Lay long items such as mattresses, tables and sofas on their side. Tie them down where necessary. Keep mirrors and picture frames upright and put them in between mattresses or tie them to the wall of the truck. Load any essential items last, so it is easier to get to them when you arrive at your destination. Make sure to lock the truck!
After you are finished packing and loading the truck, you have to drive it to your destination. Following are some tips to remember when driving the rental truck. Familiarize yourself with the gauges before leaving the rental site. Also, learn how to check the fluid levels and check them before and during the trip. Take turns slow and wide, as this will help you control a large truck. In bad weather, drive slowly. Always brake with enough time and do not tailgate. Check your mirrors often, use your turn signal when changing lanes and make sure there is enough room when changing lanes. Always leave enough time to make the trip safely. Do not drive for more than 8 hours a day and take a break every few hours.
